Chapter 13

Annie

“And just out of curiosity, if I don’t join you, what happens then?” I asked.

“Well, I’d let you go back to your mundane life, of course.” She frowned. “Why? What did you think? I’d kill you if you didn’t join me?”

Yeah, a little. “No, of course not,” I lied.

She laughed, and that was just a bit terrifying.

“Annie, there’s no way you can ever compete on my level. You’re an inconvenience at best.” That didn’t seem to match with how I’d ‘royally fucked with her plans.’ “If you don’t want to be a part of greatness, that’s your choice.” She leaned forward then, and all the niceties were gone from her face, the tiger returning. “Just one warning, though. Don’t act against me again. That would make you my enemy. Then… I’d have to destroy you.”

“And what would ‘acting against you’ entail?” A small part of me was tempted to do just that while the rest of me wanted to run screaming.

“To answer that, I’d have to know the complete extent of your powers. I know you can heal. What else can you do?”

Like I was going to tell her that now. Still I needed to say something. So, I lied. But that meant quickly recalling any and all superhero movies that ex-boyfriend had dragged me to, or what was common knowledge. “I can… fly, and walk up walls… also I’m super tough and strong.” Fuck, that last one was the truth. Oh well, couldn’t take it back now.

“And do you plan on ‘fighting crime’ in any other ways in the future with these powers? Now that I know you can heal, I’ll stay away from that, at least locally. You shouldn’t be called out by the FBI again.”

“Crime fighting? Ahhh, no, not really. I just want to live a normal life.” With my four hunky roommates. Yeah… because that was normal.

“Then I think we’ll be fine.” She leaned back, the tigress gone once again and glanced out the window as the car pulled up to the curb and stopped.

“I think we’re at your place,” she said softly. “You can leave now.” She motioned to the door.

“Ah… thanks?” I didn’t know what to say exactly. I let myself out, seeing the guys piling out of the SUV behind me.

It was disconcerting that this woman knew where I lived, but she was uber-rich, so I wasn’t actually surprised.

I waved to the limo as it drove away, though the windows were tinted black and I couldn’t see in.

“Are you well?” Aethan asked, zipping to my side in an instant.

“I will be,” I said. “Let’s get upstairs.”

I was a bit shaken, but felt a lot better with the guys around me. All of this was too much to take in and I needed time to digest it all.

I walked up to my apartment in a daze. I was so out of it, I just stood staring at my front door for a minute before remembering I needed keys to get in.

“You seem distracted,” Rion said once we were all inside.
